2 Peter 3:11-12 (NIV) Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.

In the above scripture the apostle Peter is teaching believers about the type of lifestyle they ought to live as they look forward to the day of the Lord. The day of the Lord being the day that Jesus comes back to judge all people. Those who refuse to accept him as Lord and Savior will be punished and those who do accept Jesus and live for him will receive eternal life.

I read this scripture in my journalling time and was challenged by the phrase, “as you look forward to the day of God”. The question I asked myself was, “do I look forward to the day of the Lord?”. I didn’t think of this question in terms of do I look forward to the ungodly being punished or even me receiving eternal life. What challenged me was, “do I look more forward to meeting Jesus face to face then I do to the things of this world?”. Sadly, the answer I had was that I think my life sometimes more reflects the later. That is, I look more forward to the weekend then to meeting Jesus face to face. I look more forward to the next iPhone, the next Hillsong conference, church on Sunday. These are all good things but the fact that we will meet Jesus face to face one day should far outweigh them all.

The apostle Peter had the amazing opportunity to live with Jesus. Peter got to walk and talk with Jesus. Jesus completely changed his life and I bet he couldn’t wait to see Jesus again. Believers that don’t have a relationship with God will never live a life looking forward to the day of the Lord. On the other hand believers who walk and talk with Jesus every day will be very much looking forward to the day they get to meet their Lord and Savior, their best friend, their King, their God who changed their life.

If you are a believer and you look more forward to the weekend then to meeting Jesus face to face I challenge you to have a day to day relationship with Jesus like Peter did. Nothing beats a relationship with Jesus, but the truth is that we people are not perfect and will always be tempted by the things of this world. I have challenged myself to know Jesus more then I do now and to not let the things of this world become more important then him and I charge you with the same challenge.
